Not every container that lands in South Florida leaves by truck for its whole journey. A meaningful share transfers to rail for the long haul, with short truck moves on each end. That short move is drayage too — but it works differently enough from port drayage to be worth understanding before you plan around it.

The two kinds of drayage in an intermodal move

An intermodal shipment routed by rail typically involves:

  • Port-to-ramp drayage — the container moves from the marine terminal to the intermodal rail facility. Sometimes this is handled by the ocean carrier as part of a through bill of lading; sometimes it’s yours to arrange.
  • The rail linehaul — the long-distance leg.
  • Ramp-to-door drayage — the container is lifted off at the destination ramp and trucked to the receiver.

The word “drayage” applies to both truck legs. What changes is the facility, the appointment system, and the free-time rules.

How rail ramp drayage differs from port drayage

Different free time, different name

Marine terminals charge demurrage. Rail ramps charge storage, on their own schedule, with their own free time — often shorter than you’d expect, sometimes measured in a couple of days. A container that clears the port cleanly can still rack up rail storage charges if nobody is watching the ramp clock.

Different chassis rules

Chassis supply at rail ramps operates on different pools and different arrangements than at marine terminals. A carrier that has chassis sorted at the port doesn’t automatically have chassis sorted at the ramp.

Different access requirements

Rail ramps have their own gate procedures, driver registration, and appointment systems. TWIC is a port requirement; ramps have their own credentialing. A carrier needs to be set up at each specific facility.

Different equipment types

Domestic intermodal containers — the 53-foot boxes used for inland freight — are a different animal from 40-foot marine containers, with different chassis and different handling. If your freight transloads from marine to domestic equipment, that’s a separate operation at a transload facility.

When rail makes sense out of South Florida

Geography matters here. South Florida sits at the end of a peninsula, which shapes the calculus:

  • Long inland distances — freight heading to the Midwest, Northeast, or West generally benefits from rail on the long leg.
  • Non-urgent freight — rail transit is slower and less precise than truck. If your delivery window is tight, rail adds risk.
  • Volume — the economics improve with consistent flow.
  • In-state and regional moves — usually go by truck. The distances rarely justify the double handling.

The trade-off is straightforward: rail typically costs less per mile on long hauls and burns less fuel per ton-mile, but adds two lift events, two sets of free-time rules, and less schedule precision. Transload as the alternative

There’s a third path that often beats both: transload the marine container into domestic equipment near the port, then move the domestic trailer or 53-foot container inland by whichever mode fits.

  • The marine container goes back to the terminal quickly, stopping per diem
  • Cargo from multiple 40-foot containers consolidates into fewer, larger domestic units
  • You’re no longer constrained by ocean carrier equipment rules or interchange requirements
  • Routing flexibility opens up — rail or truck, one destination or several

Planning a rail-routed move

Practical checklist:

  1. Confirm who arranges the port-to-ramp leg. Through bills of lading vary; assume nothing.
  2. Get the ramp’s free time in writing and diarize the expiry, separately from your marine free time.
  3. Confirm chassis arrangements at both ends. This is the most common source of surprise delay.
  4. Verify your destination drayage carrier is set up at that specific ramp.
  5. Build schedule buffer. Rail transit variability is normal, not exceptional.
  6. Plan the empty return — where does the marine container go back, and who is returning it?
