Before 2014, every truck serving PortMiami drove through downtown Miami. Container traffic crossed the Port Bridge onto city streets, threaded past the arena and the financial district, and worked its way to the interstate. It was slow for truckers and unpopular with everyone else.

The PortMiami Tunnel changed that by connecting the port directly to the MacArthur Causeway and, from there, to I-395 and the wider highway network. What the tunnel actually does

Restrictions still apply

The tunnel is a highway facility with normal commercial vehicle restrictions. Height, weight, and hazardous materials rules apply, and oversized or overweight loads may need to use alternative routing under permit. If you move overweight containers or hazmat, confirm routing with your carrier rather than assuming the tunnel is available — permitted routes are specific and do not always include it.

Closures happen

Maintenance, incidents, and occasional emergency closures push traffic back to the Port Bridge and downtown streets, which is a meaningfully slower route. A carrier without local knowledge of the alternatives loses more time to this than one that runs the market daily.

The causeway is still the causeway

The tunnel delivers trucks onto the MacArthur Causeway, which carries heavy commuter and tourist traffic. Peak periods are genuinely congested, and a drayage plan that ignores time of day will underperform regardless of the tunnel.

Port Everglades is a different picture

Worth noting for shippers who use both. Port Everglades has direct access to I-595 and from there to I-95 and the Turnpike, without an equivalent urban bottleneck. Its access profile has always been simpler. That does not automatically make it the better choice — vessel services, terminal operators, and free time differ — but it does mean the port-access comparison between the two has narrowed considerably since the tunnel opened. Why local presence still matters most

The tunnel improved the road. It did not change the fundamentals of drayage economics, which are driven by how close your equipment sits to the gate, how quickly you can react to an appointment opening, and whether you have somewhere to put a container when the consignee is not ready.

A carrier based in Miami with its own yard can take a late-morning appointment that opens up, pull the container, stage it, and deliver the next morning. A carrier dispatching from two hours away cannot, regardless of how good the road is.
